Shortly after awakening as a capsuleer, Korbin became lost while stumbling around a new station. Picking a door he thought might lead to the exit, he found himself in a janitor's closet next to a malfunctioning Quafe unit. Suddenly a compartment on the unit opened, and he found himself sucked into an Upwell Experimental Capsuleer Stasis module! In a completely unrelated coincidence the janitor responsible for that corridor never returned from their lunch break, and the position went unfilled for the next 15 years. Finally, a passing bus driver dropped off a replacement janitor and Korbin was released from stasis chronologically older, but still with only the skills of a new capsuleer. The bus driver took pity on him, and provided blueprints for several ships to help get him back on his feet.
If you're a recent arrival to New Eden, make sure to watch Local Chat when you're in your School system - you too might spot a kind bus driver, and if you follow their instructions will likely find yourself the recipient of a starting gift!
